We just watched GRIZZLY MAN the fascinating documentary by Werner Herzog about bear lover Timothy Treadmill.
Herzog deals with his complex character with love, but does not fail to point out the obvious about Timothy and the risky life he chose. Timothy's trouble dealing with life with humans and the sad truth that his girlfriend was really afraid of bears, but because of her love of Timothy...ultimately gives her life up for his.
The soundtrack for this film is a perfect match done by Richard Thompson and a team of talented musicians.
I choose Keep Your Distance from Richard Thompson for the song of the day because although I know that Timothy was doing what he wanted to do and had some awareness of the risk he faced daily, but I wish he would have known to keep his distance and his girlfriend's distance from such strong and mighty animals.
The song isn't a lesson about bear safety...just so no one is disappointed.
Saw Richard Thompson last night and he pulled out an oldie...Read about Love...and then on the way home listened to Belle & Sebastian's Meat and Potatoes....made me think about how complex we are as earthy creatures and how complex and delicate the process is of our coming together...and how magical it is when it all works! Whooo hooo! Yeee haw!
I am starting this blog with the idea that every day has a song in it that somehow stands out as key to the day. It is a goal to write more every day, so I am hoping this will force me to do that.
The song of the day for 8/10/07 is Richard Thompson's Wall of Death. I love this song and it is a favorite from college days. We have yelled it out at Richard Thompson concerts and he has played it for us, or humored us, whatever, it made us happy. Last night we heard that Richard Thompson was coming to town to play. I had mixed feelings about whether to attend this concert or not for a variety of reasons, but this morning I grabbed a book to read and totally at random the first page I flipped to a phrase jumped out at me...WALL OF DEATH. It referred to the amusement park ride that the song is named for, not the song, but never mind, it convinced me I should go to see the concert. Also when I went to wake my son for work today another Richard Thompson song was playing which was one more reminder. My answer to the universe was to buy tickets today for the concert. I will try to sit away from the geezer section so I don't get depressed.
