We just got Teddy Thompson's newest, A Piece of What You Need.
It is a nice, solid and pop-ish offering. It tends a bit towards country sensibilities but that works for me just fine.
I tend to favor the first three tracks---the things I do, what's this and the deeper...in my arms.
His mommy and daddy done real good with Teddy!
My newest fav is a song called Bye Bye Bye done by Montreal's Plants and Animals.
It has a richness to it, the music builds and swells. It is reminiscent of David Bowie or music from an earlier time, but yet it is music of now, fresh and new.
The writing is fine and the lead singer has a euphoric edge to them that takes you to another place.
What's gonna happen to you?...
The rest of their newest offering Parc Avenue is also promising, I am still listening and absorbing it.
Although I have heard this song tons of times, this morning it stayed with me and I had to go back and listen again. I needed to hear the message that everything has a space and a place to exist. I know that now, that's why I'm staying here..
Everything Must Belong Somewhere---Bright Eyes
Leave the bright blue door on the white-washed wall
Leave the death ledger under city hall
Leave the joyful air in that rubber ball today
Just leave the lilac print on the linen sheet
Leave the birds you killed at your father's feet
Let the sideways rain in the crooked street remain
Leave whimpering dog in his cold kennel
Leave the dead starlet on her pedestal
Leave the acid kids in their green fishbowls today
Leave the sad guitar in its hard-shell case
Leave the worried look on your lover's face
Let the orange embers in the fireplace remain
Cause everything it must belong somewhere
Oh a train off in the distance, bicycle chained to the stairs
Everything it must belong somewhere
I know that now, that's why I'm staying here
Leave the ocean's roar in the turquoise shell
Leave the widower in his private hell
Leave the liberty in that broken bell today
Just leave the epic poem on its yellowed page
Leave the gray macaw in his covered cage
Let the traveling band on the interstate remain
Cause everything it must belong somewhere
Sound-stage in California, televisions in Times Square, yeah
Everything it must belong somewhere
I know that now, that's why I'm staying here
Well I know that now that's why I'm staying here
Leave the secret talks on the trundle bed
Leave the garden tools in the rusted shed
Leave those bad ideas in your troubled head today
Just leave the restless ghost in his old hotel
Leave the homeless man out in that cardboard cell
Let the painted horse on the carousel remain
Cause everything it must belong somewhere
Just like the gold around her finger or the silver in his hair
Yeah, everything it must belong somewhere
I know that now, that's why I'm staying here
I know that now, that's why I'm staying here
In truth, the forest hears each sound
Each blade of grass as it lies down
The world requires no audience
no witnesses, no witnesses
Leave the old town drunk on his wooden stool
Leave the autumn leaves in their swimming pool
Leave the poor black child in his crumbling school today
Leave novelist in his daydream tomb
Leave the scientist in her rubic's cube
Let true genius in the padded room remain
Leave horse's hair on the slanted bow
Leave the slot machines on the riverboat
Leave the cauliflower in the casserole today
Leave the hot, bright trash in the shopping malls
Leave the hawks of war in their capitals
Let the organ's moan in the cathedral remain
Cause everything it must belong somewhere
They locked the devil in the basement, threw God up into the air.
Yeah, everything must belong somewhere
You know it's true, I wish you'd leave me here
You know it's true, why don't you leave me here?
Thanks to Richard and Linda Thompson and the time they spent together creating.
It's Just the Motion...has comforted us when we were young parents with very few resources and it still comforts us now when the kids are nearly grown and life keeps providing lots of worry options.
When the worry seems too great I remember this song and feel immense peace.
When you're rocked on the ocean, rocked up and down, don't worry
When you're spinning and turning round and around, don't worry
You're just feeling sea-sick, you're just feeling weak
Your mind is confused and you can't seem to speak
It's just the motion, it's just the motion
When the landlord is knocking and your job is losing, don't worry
And the baby needs rocking and your friends are confusing, don't worry
You're just feeling sea-sick, you're just feeling weak
Your mind is confused and you can't seem to speak
Oh, it's just the motion, it's just the motion
Blown by a hundred winds, knocked down a hundred times
Rescued and carried along. Beaten and half-dead and gone
And it's only the pain that's keeping you sane
And gives you a mind to travel on
Oh the motion won't leave you, won't let you remain, don't worry
It's a restless wind and a sleepless rain, don't worry
'Cause under the ocean at the bottom of the sea
You can't hear the storm, it's as peaceful as can be
It's just the motion, it's just the motion
Blown by a hundred winds, knocked down a hundred times
Rescued and carried along. Beaten and half-dead and gone
And it's only the pain that's keeping you sane
And gives you a mind to travel on
Oh the motion won't leave you, won't let you remain, don't worry
It's a restless wind and a sleepless rain, don't worry
'Cause under the ocean at the bottom of the sea
You can't hear the storm, it's as peaceful as can be
It's just the motion, it's just the motion
It's just the motion, it's just the motion
Today's song is from Lily Allen...totally matches the feeling of being in limbo due to an org change at work...let's pretend everything is just wonderful and that we're having the time of our lives! Although her complaints below might seem trivial in the scheme of things, they are real to her, as are all of our concerns day to day, they are real to us and somedays we struggle to make sense of the craziness.
"Everything's Just Wonderful"
It seems to me that it's spiraling outta control and it's inevitable,
Now don't you think,
This time is yours, this time is mine,
It's temperamental,
It seems to me, we're on all fours,
Crawling on our knees,
Someone help us please
Oh Jesus Christ almighty,
Do I feel alright? No not slightly,
I wanna get a flat I know I can't afford it,
It's just the bureaucrats who won't give me a mortgage,
Well it's very funny cos I got your f*ng money,
And I'm never gonna get it just because of my bad credit
Oh well I guess I mustn't grumble,
I suppose that's just the way the cookie crumbles.
[Chorus]
Oh yes, I'm fine,
Everything's just wonderful,
I'm having the time of my life.
Don't you want something else,
Something new, than what we've got here,
And don't you feel it's all the same,
Some sick game and it's not insincere,
I wish I could change the ways of the world,
Make it a nice place
Until that day, I guess we stay,
Doing what we do
Screwing who we screw
Why can't I sleep at night,
Don't say it's gonna be alright,
I wanna be able to eat spaghetti bolognaise,
and not feel bad about it for days and days and days.
In the magazines they talk about weight loss,
If I buy those jeans I can look like Kate Moss,
Oh no it's not the life I chose,
But I guess that's the way that things go,
[Chorus x2]
Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba [etc.]
[Chorus x2]
I know this is crazy but the song of the day is Highway Star by Deep Purple.
Have you heard this song where the car is the woman and the woman is the car?
It is crazy! And it rocks! Why aren't there more songs about women and cars?
Every year on the 5th day of May if it is a good year we listen to ISIS by Bob Dylan.
I suggest that every one who is so compelled to add it to their list of things to do on Cinco de Mayo. Have a margarita and give this treasure a listen.
Bob is amazing in his ability to capture longing, uncertainty, life and death and the wilderness we find ourselves in when we trust another human with our fate. Love and peace to Bob and all Bobs!
"I married Isis on the fifth day of May,
But I could not hold on to her very long.
So I cut off my hair and I rode straight away
For the wild unknown country where I could not go wrong."
Flight of the Conchords Business Time. This fun and wacky song has been running in the background of my mind this past week. When I'm down to my socks you know what time it is. It's business time!
I admire this song because it succeeds in capturing some of the most common stereotypes around how men and women function but also holds up these differences in a sweet and adoring way at the same time.
How we come together to do the important things like recycling, but still how important it is for us to seek each other out for the needful whenever we can in our busy lives.
LET'S GET LOST by Lloyd Cole. The sun was shining today and this little song made me want to go get lost and work on a farm, the change of weather couldn't cause us no harm...thjis little song made my day.
Have heard of the Weepies before but didn't get to really give them their due and fair time listening.
Cute couple playing sweet and rich tunes.
I love Hideaway---even the stars sometimes fade to gray...even the stars hideaway.
I am definitely going to check out their Rumi inspired CD "Say I Am You" which is a lovely collection of love songs.
It is okay for us to hideaway sometimes----
