Song of the day...by the Portland punk songsters The Obituaries...Inside The Womb.
When the world is scary and uncertain and we don't know what is coming next...try this song. It stands the test of time as a beautiful rock classic. Monica's delicate and subtle lisp is sweet but her voice is strong and reassuring. We all want to go to a place where everybody knows our name and wants to know more about us and cares about us. Warm and secure. Where no one will laugh at us. Perfect!
To my glorious surprise this can now be purchased on itunes...the song and or the whole CD...I highly recommend it...
On this dark and cold day of December...I leave you with Sparklehorse Shade and Honey...they sing in summertones:
May your shade be sweet
And float upon the lakes
Where the sun will be
Made of honey
I'm dreaming of drippy honey sunshine coating us with a blanket of warmth.
Last night was the fun and entertaining Aimee Mann Christmas show at the Aladdin Theater in Portland Oregon. Fantastic array of guest appearances, humorous interludes and a 3 part film. We went as a family and LOVED it!
Song of yesterday has to be I WAS THINKING I WOULD CLEAN UP FOR CHRISTMAS...which Aimee performed.
Great song of longing and striving and what how addictions of any sort can flavor our lives and our relationships.
We just watched GRIZZLY MAN the fascinating documentary by Werner Herzog about bear lover Timothy Treadmill.
Herzog deals with his complex character with love, but does not fail to point out the obvious about Timothy and the risky life he chose. Timothy's trouble dealing with life with humans and the sad truth that his girlfriend was really afraid of bears, but because of her love of Timothy...ultimately gives her life up for his.
The soundtrack for this film is a perfect match done by Richard Thompson and a team of talented musicians.
I choose Keep Your Distance from Richard Thompson for the song of the day because although I know that Timothy was doing what he wanted to do and had some awareness of the risk he faced daily, but I wish he would have known to keep his distance and his girlfriend's distance from such strong and mighty animals.
The song isn't a lesson about bear safety...just so no one is disappointed.
Today is the 25 year anniversary of Brad's and I my first date.
We've traveled a fur piece since those days of Giovanni's pizza and Officer and a Gentleman.
This last month has been very busy and sadly I haven't found as much time for the blogging, but I am going to try to get back on it.
We saw the Todd Haynes flick I'm Not There about the Bob. The soundtrack is terrific! My song of the day is in honor of all of the great and wonderful time spent with Brad...I choo-choo-choose all of the songs on the soundtrack...but the one song I choose for today is ISIS. (Not on the soundtrack) Brad and I love to sing along to every word in this song and drive our children crazy. We try to always remember to play it on the 5th day of May...in the drizzle and the rain.
For all the times we chop through the day and we chop through the dawn, when we go into the laundry and wash our clothes down, when the dividing line runs through the center of town----for all the times and the ways and the hows of this crazy life---
I love you Brad.
Song of the day in honor of my mom's birthday is A Spoonful Weighs a Ton by the Flaming Lips.
Watched the UFOs at the Zoo DVD...had it on my heart and mind.
Here are the lyric for A Spoonful Weights a Ton:
And though they were sad
They rescued everyone
They lifted up the sun
A spoonful weighs a ton
Giving more than they had
The process had begun
A million came from one
The limits now were none
Being drunk on their plan, they lifted up the sun
Forcing it off with their hands
The trapdoor came undone
Above our heads it swung
The privilege had been won
Being drunk on their plan, they lifted up the sun
Yelling as hard as they can
The doubters all were stunned
Heard louder than a gun
The sound they made was love
We all need to know that together we can lift up the sun! The theme for my mom this year is to stay in the sunshine...whether there is sunshine or not...and this is a good time to think about giving more that we have. If we focus on that...we are less apt to spin on our own discontents and worries.
The song of the day and the song of the weekend is ANY song with RAIN in it...but simply replace with WAYNE(as in Wayne Coyne)...loads of fun although there could be a risk that people listening to you will believe you have a bostonian R accent...
Wayne drops keep falling on my head...
Why does it always wayne on me...
Wayne down, come on Wayne down on me...
Someone left the cake out in the wayne...
Drip drip drop little wayne drops falling...
Oh I love a wayney night...
Hours of endless entertainment and hilarity!
Today there was a theme of Salmon...surrounded by people eating Salmon pink and luscious...had just seen the video Salmon Dance by Chemical Brothers...gosh I love those guys and their flair for the videos!
Also learned that vibrant and hip Pastor Laurie is attending a Salmon Nation event soon.
I'm not under any known "influences" but when I watch that video the magic of the song and the rhythm of the fish and the bits of fish folklore and trivia just makes me SOOOO happy!
My wish is that every kid and person out there that might be having an "enhanced" experience has a rich experience equal or better than the Salmon Dance video!!!
Here is to enhanced knowledge of the beautiful Salmon and what they bring to us at great sacrifice---let us treasure them---each shimmer and shimmy that they lend us...
PS Watch for the little cameo of the Chem Bros as they usually put a little something of themselves into each video...
Dialing Darling by The Young Knives.
This song haunted me all weekend as the music sounded vaguely familiar but being on my iPod shuffle could not 100% identify it, googled some of the lyrics, wasn't working.
Finally my brain started singing another song from the Young Knives and I thought A HA! It has to be from them...
Tracked down both the CDs I had from them and luckily happily found it!!!
The Mekons show last night at the Aladdin made me heart the Mekons! They have been the background sound in my life for a long time but I've never been able to see them live before now...so WOW! It was the best show EVER!
They make me want to hurry up to get to my 50s so I can be cool and graceful and rockin like they are!
They give me hope as time speeds hopelessly along...that life doesn't have to be a dismal slide into the grave...they were able to acknowledge the fact of their aging (fantasizing about performing on a comfy mattress underneath a duvet)...but not let it slow them down or stop them or lessen their enthusiasm.
Beautiful beautiful music. Incredible opening band The Sadies...they both rocked the joint.
For the Song of the Day I pick the Sadie's newest CD...
My head is full of all of the songs from last night so today I won't just pick one.
I want to get my hands on the newest Sadies' and go back and revisit again the Mekon's library and also get the new one to listen to!
Cheers to all the middle aged rockers out there--I'm loving you!
PS The other day a guy saw in my cube a pix of the Flaming Lips on my computer...he asked me "are you a rocker or something?" I thought for a moment and said, "why yes I am!"
